Pay attention kids: You might be able to win scholarship money by taking a good picture

As a dad with one kid in college and two more on the way, I know that they (and Dad) appreciate any opportunity to save a little money when it comes to the four years after high school. So, it’s cool when talented kids have an opportunity to do just that. Here’s the latest:

Dallas-area high school students are being asked to enter (for free) the fifth annual “Retail as Art” Photography Invitational and Scholarship Contest, which lays out this request: That they “capture the true essence of Dallas retail.” The contest is open to all Dallas Independent School District students as well as “local area private high school students.” The deadline for submitting participation forms is March 13.

For more information and submission criteria, visit www.ucrrealty.com/retail-as-art or go to this site: www.Facebook.com/RetailAsArt.

The contest is sponsored by United Commercial Realty (UCR), which describes itself as Texas’ largest retail real estate services provider.

The judges of the students’ submissions are “local photographers, taste makers and industry professionals.” The top three winning entrants will receive a UCR “Retail as Art” scholarship. The mission of the contest, organizers say, “is to showcase the best local photographic talent, celebrate and capture the true essence of Dallas retail and reward students and their schools for their talent and efforts.”

The kickoff party, “an informative orientation,” will be held Wednesday (March 6) from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Design Within Reach, 4524 McKinney Avenue in Dallas, where “guest speakers including industry professionals and photographers will provide helpful advice to the students” and answer questions.

Again, the participation forms, available online at www.ucrrealty.com/retail-as-art are due by March 13, 2013, and artwork submission is due by April 5, 2013. After the judging process concludes, the winning images and other notable submissions will be exhibited at the “Retail as Art” Exhibit on May 8 at Three Three Three First Avenue Studio where the winners will be announced.

Take a look at the photograph posted with this blog item. That’s the shot that won last year.
